Join us for the 2013 JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes!

This is Owen. He's 7 years old and just started 2nd grade. He's one of the coolest, most imaginative, smart, thoughtful and sweet kids we know. Three years ago, at age 4, he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).

What started out as a few simple questions of his pediatrician, ended with us taking Owen to the hospital with a blood sugar of over 600. A typical blood sugar, for a person without T1D, is 100. We took this picture just a few days before his diagnosis. He was becoming really skinny, pale, and lethargic. He stayed in the hospital for 2 days, while we learned how to give him insulin shots, test his blood sugar and count his carbs to ensure good blood sugars.

This July, Owen started wearing an insulin pump, which is a tube and catheter attached to his body which delivers insulin constantly throughout the day.  We are hopeful that this will help us maintain more stable blood sugars for him, plus it cuts down on the number of shots he receives, which he loves!  He still requires frequent blood sugar checks and wears a Constant Glucose Monitor, which allow us to predict when his blood sugar is going to dip too low or climb too high. We count every carb that he eats, to accurately determine how much insulin he should receive at each meal. He was also diagnosed with Celiac disease this May, so we have eliminated gluten from his diet.  At least 20% of all people with diabetes have Celac, which adds an extra layer of monitoring and vigilance to our lives.  Going to school, having playdates, playing sports, eating out, and going on vacation are still extremely challenging

Despite all this, Owen has not allowed T1D to stop him from becoming the greatest kid we could ever dream of.

He is a wonderful, fun and caring big brother...

He loves school, especially being a bee in the 1st grade play.  He is a voracious reader and writer.

He loves creating with Legos and playing imaginative games.

This summer, he told us that his two favorite things are hiking and camping.  He loves exploring nature.

He even went on his first one-night backpacking trip!

This year, we are assembling a team for the 2013 JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes. Our team will be called "Owen's Entourage." We whole-heartedly believe in the mission of the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). Over 85% of monies donated to JDRF are used for research in the prevention, treatment and cure of T1D. They also have an active branch in many cities, providing outreach to families living with T1D. Our Colorado Springs branch throws a sugar-free Halloween party every year, which is one of the highlights of the year for Owen, and we have an active family support group which gives Owen a chance to meet other young kids in the area who are living with the disease.

We would like to extend the opportunity to you, our family and friends, to either join us on the walk, on September 14, 2014 or to donate to our team, "Owen's Entourage". The walk starts at America the Beautiful Park in Colorado Springs and is a 5K. Check-in time is 9:00am, on 9/14/13. If you are interested in joining us, please click here. Then click on the "Register" link and search for Owen's Entourage. The walk is really a fun time, with many activities for kiddos before and after the walk, and a catered lunch for all walkers. So, join us if you'd like! The more, the merrier!

If you are out-of-state, or just can't make it to the walk, please consider donating to our team. Normally, I feel uncomfortable in asking people to donate to a cause, but this particular cause is so near-and-dear to our hearts. Each year, approximately 15,000 children are diagnosed with this disease, and the incidence in children under age 14 is increasing by 3% each year. Every little bit helps in finding a cure for T1D. If you would like to make a donation, please click here, and hit the "Donate" button and search for "Owen's Entourage". This year, we are asking that all donations be made directly to Owen, since he is the team captain and the person with T1D on the team.  He has also decided to donate $1 of his own money and hopes that other kids on the team will do the same.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read our story. Please feel free to join us at the walk, donate to our team, or contact me with any questions at jbhobgood@gmail.com.

July update

Josh has been back at work for a week and the boys will start school in a couple weeks, so I thought it was time to go through the last pictures of our summer adventures.

This is Wyatt on the 4th of July.  He was having a blast.

Our big highlight of July was a Belteau-family trip to Grand Lake.  We went on some hikes...

...saw three bull moose from our cabin, but only took a picture of one...

...spent many hours using the kayak and canoe that came with the cabin (that's all 5 of us in the canoe!)...

...and enjoyed some time in town.

Megan Lake backpacking trip - June 2013

In mid-June, the Hobgood 5 set out on our first family backpacking trip.  Our plan was to hike to Megan Lake, an alpine lake in the Sangre de Cristos, which was a 2.5 mile hike from the trailhead.  However, the road was a little too much for our car, so we parked about 1.5 miles from the trailhead, put on our packs and headed into the mountains.

We made it to the trailhead!

Wyatt was chillin' during a snack break.

We had to do one stream crossing by foot.  Josh and I carried the packs, plus the kids.  It was cold!

You can see from the sky in this picture that some smoke started rolling in, towards evening, from all the fires in Colorado.  Luckily, we camped near some trail guides who had called the Forest Service and we knew that the fires were quite far away.

Almost bedtime! We camped a little short of our original destination, opting to stay in the forest
rather than hike all the way up to the lake.

The next morning, the smoke had cleared and we headed out for Megan Lake.  It was gorgeous and well worth the hike.

Owen was incredibly independent on the hike.  He carried his own sleeping bag and crossed log bridges all by himself.  When we got back to the car, he told us that backpacking was one of the coolest things he had ever done, because he loves hiking and camping so much.

This is what a 2-year old looks like after 2 days outside:-)  Dirty, but happy!

Great Sand Dunes 2013

In early June, we met up with all the Hobgoods and Closes for a trip to the Sand Dunes.

The first three pictures are my favorites of each kiddo.

Owen and Logan are inseparable and the best of friends.  Josh said "this is one for the record books", which I think means that it's the cutest picture of all time for these buddies.

 Molly loved the playground.

Wyatt loved stomping and dancing in the creek.

We spent two long afternoons playing in the creek at the base of the Sand Dunes.  Owen was engrossed in a game that involved digging, kicking, running and laughing maniacally.  This is the digging phase of the game.

On the right, Owen is about the enter the kicking phase of his game.  Josh, Molly and Wyatt are building a big pool, called a "hot tub".

The dads started constructing a sand castle almost immediately.  This is the sand castle from Day 1, which they dubbed "King's Landing".

Josh thought he should try to jump over the castle from Day 2.

Then everyone got in on the jumping action...

Then, Molly decided to try to jump, too.  Her jump was really just a run around the castle, but the older kids jumped over the bridge.

Everyone chipped in on the second castle, as you can see.

Since this was our second trip to the Dunes, we added in a couple of new adventures.  We hiked a short distance to Zapata Falls, which was actually really cool.  We also went to the Gator Farm, but did not get any good pictures.  I love this picture because Molly looks like such a goofball.  She was so happy to be walking and to be getting alot of attention:-)

Molly ended the hike on Josh's shoulders.

Most of the kids and adults made it up to the falls.  It was a pretty intense hike at the end, with some wading in ice cold water, but the dads did a great job of hauling the kids!

We spent both nights at the Alamosa KOA, which was great fun for the kids because of the playground.  The boys ADORED playing tether ball.  Wyatt did not even mind getting hit in the head!

Molly, Wyatt, and Laila really loved the merry-go-round.

I love this picture!  Laila is concentrating SO HARD on pushing and Molly is clearly having a blast!

Owen and Logan rode their bikes all over the campground.  Owen was quite sad to leave because he wanted to ride with Logan for hours and hours more.

Spring Update...

It's been a busy spring, but I wanted to drop in and update this space with a few new pictures.  We spent Mother's Day morning at Helen Hunt Falls, which is a popular and BEAUTIFUL hike in Colorado Springs.  It has everything that kids need for a fun day.  Several waterfalls....
 awesome stone stairs....
 some awesome wooden stairs....
and a cool stone overlook at the top (with more small falls).

At the end of April, Owen had his 1st grade musical, called "Bugz!"  He was a bee.  It was adorable.

Owen had a day off of school in May, so we headed to Rock Ledge Ranch, which is one of our favorite places to explore.  All the kids were really excited to go see the farm animals and wildlife, especially Molly.

We found a couple new areas that we had never visited, which included this natural teepee.
